Why Nobody Is Finding You on Google (And How to Fix It)

You Google your own business name and there you are. Great. Now Google "roofer near me" or "kitchen remodel [your city]" and... nothing. You're nowhere. Meanwhile three competitors are sitting right at the top pulling in the calls that should be yours.

Showing up when someone searches your name doesn't count. Anyone can do that. The money is in showing up when someone searches for what you do and doesn't know you exist yet. Here's why you're invisible and how to fix it.

The Difference Between the Two Google Results

When someone searches for a contractor, Google shows two things that matter:

  • The Map Pack - the little map with 3 local businesses at the top. This is where most local jobs come from.
  • The organic results - the regular blue links below the map.

If you're not in either of those for the searches that matter, you're invisible to everyone who doesn't already know your name. And that's the vast majority of your potential customers.

The hard truth: Ranking for your own business name means nothing. If you don't show up for "[your service] near me," you're missing the customers who are actually shopping right now.

Reason 1: Your Google Business Profile Is Weak or Missing

This is the number one reason contractors don't show up in the Map Pack. Your Google Business Profile (the free listing that powers the map results) is either unclaimed, half-filled-out, or hasn't been touched in years.

Google can't rank what it doesn't trust. An incomplete profile with no photos, wrong hours, and no reviews tells Google you might not even be a real, active business.

The fix: Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile. Add every service, real photos, correct hours, your service area, and keep it updated. This is the single biggest lever for local visibility.

Reason 2: You Have No Reviews (Or Old Ones)

Reviews are one of the strongest ranking signals for local search. Google looks at how many you have, how recent they are, and how often new ones come in. A business with 60 recent reviews will almost always outrank one with 5 from two years ago.

No reviews tells Google you're either new, inactive, or not trusted. Any of those push you down the results.

The fix: Build a steady stream of new reviews. Ask every happy customer, make it one tap, and aim for a few new ones every month - not one big batch and then silence.

Reason 3: Your Website Gives Google Nothing to Work With

For the organic results, Google needs to understand what you do and where you do it. A lot of contractor websites are just a logo, a phone number, and a photo of a truck. There's no actual content for Google to read and rank.

If your site never mentions your specific services and the areas you serve in real text, Google has no reason to show you when someone searches for those things.

  • Pages for each service you offer (roofing, repairs, replacements, etc.)
  • Your city and service areas mentioned naturally throughout
  • Actual written content that answers what homeowners search for
  • A blog that targets the questions your customers Google

Reason 4: Your Site Is Slow or Not Mobile-Friendly

Most people search for contractors on their phone. If your site loads slowly or looks broken on mobile, Google notices - and so do the visitors who bounce before it even loads. Both hurt your ranking.

The fix: Make sure your site loads fast and works cleanly on a phone. Test it on your own phone right now. If it's slow or clunky, that's costing you rankings and calls.

Reason 5: Your Business Info Isn't Consistent

If your name, address, and phone number are different across your website, Google profile, Facebook, and old directory listings, Google gets confused about which info is right - and confused Google doesn't rank you.

Make sure your exact business name, address, and phone number match everywhere they appear online. This one small cleanup can noticeably improve your local ranking.

Reason 6: You're New and It Just Takes Time

Sometimes the answer is simply time. SEO and local ranking aren't instant. A new website or a freshly claimed profile can take a few months to climb. That's normal - but only if you're doing the other things above. Waiting alone won't rank you. Waiting while building reviews, content, and a strong profile will.

What to Do First

If you're starting from zero, do these in order:

  1. Claim and completely fill out your Google Business Profile
  2. Start collecting reviews and keep them coming
  3. Make sure your business info is identical everywhere online
  4. Add real service and location content to your website
  5. Fix your site speed and mobile experience

Nail the first three and you'll usually start showing up in the Map Pack within a couple months. The website work compounds from there.

The Bottom Line

If nobody's finding you on Google, it's not bad luck - it's almost always a weak Google Business Profile, missing reviews, or a website that gives Google nothing to rank. The good news is every one of those is fixable.

Your competitors at the top of the results aren't necessarily better contractors. They just showed up online the right way. Do the same and those searches start turning into calls - the ones you're currently handing to the other guy.
