Google Ads vs Facebook Ads for Contractors: Which One Actually Works?

Every contractor eventually asks the same question: should I run Google Ads or Facebook Ads? The honest answer is that they do completely different jobs - and the right choice depends on what you're trying to accomplish.

Here's the real difference, when to use each, and what most contractors get wrong.

The Core Difference

Google Ads catch people who are already looking for you. Someone types "roof repair near me" into Google - they have a problem right now and they're actively searching for a solution. Your ad shows up, they click, they call.

Facebook and Instagram Ads catch people who aren't looking yet. They're scrolling their feed, not thinking about their roof at all. Your ad interrupts them with a compelling offer and plants the idea.

Simplest way to think about it: Google captures existing demand. Facebook creates new demand. One finds people ready to buy. The other makes people want to buy.

When Google Ads Win

Google is usually the stronger choice when:

  • You offer emergency or urgent services (roof leaks, burst pipes, AC out in summer)
  • People actively search for your service by name
  • You want high-intent leads ready to book now
  • You can afford a higher cost per click in exchange for better-qualified leads

The downside: Google clicks are expensive in competitive trades, and you're limited by how many people are actually searching in your area each month.

When Facebook Ads Win

Facebook and Instagram tend to win when:

  • Your service is something people want but don't urgently search for (remodels, decks, pools, landscaping)
  • You have a strong offer that grabs attention ("Free design consultation this week")
  • You want lower cost per lead and higher volume
  • You want to build brand awareness in your local market over time

The downside: Facebook leads are colder. They weren't looking for you, so they need more follow-up and nurturing before they book.

The Mistake Most Contractors Make

They treat it as either/or and pick one based on a gut feeling. Then when it doesn't work in the first two weeks, they blame the platform and quit.

The truth is that the platform is rarely the problem. A bad offer fails on both. A weak landing page fails on both. No follow-up system fails on both. Before you blame Google or Facebook, make sure the rest of your system is built right.

The best setup for most contractors: Facebook to create demand and fill the top of your pipeline at a lower cost, plus Google to capture the people actively searching at the bottom. Together they cover the entire buying journey.

What About Budget?

If you only have budget for one to start, here's the rule of thumb:

  • Urgent/emergency services (roofing repair, HVAC, plumbing): start with Google
  • Planned/discretionary services (remodels, decks, pools, landscaping): start with Facebook

Get one working profitably first, then add the second once you have cash flow and data to scale.

The Bottom Line

Google Ads and Facebook Ads aren't competitors - they're teammates. Google catches the people ready to buy today. Facebook builds the pipeline of people who'll buy next month. The contractors who win use both, but they start with whichever matches how people actually find their specific service.

The platform matters less than the system behind it. Get the offer, the landing page, and the follow-up right - then the channel almost takes care of itself.
